PAUL DURNHAM
There is a moment in a creative life when experience stops being a résumé and becomes a language.
For Paul Durnham, that moment has taken more than three decades to arrive.
His journey began in Germany and soon carried him far beyond it. An opportunity with Eastman Kodak took him to Harrow in England and later to the United States, where Rochester and Seattle became early stations in a life increasingly shaped by photography, film and visual culture.
In the early 2000s, he moved to New York as a freelance filmmaker and photographer. It was a short stay, but an important one.
New York became another point of departure before Durnham headed west to California, eventually making Los Angeles and Long Beach his home for many years. Along the way, the work expanded. Commercial productions led to collaborations with artists, brands, musicians and celebrities. Photography became filmmaking. Filmmaking crossed into music. Experience in one discipline began informing another.
There were awards and nominations. There were productions and clients. There were years of learning how images are made, how stories are constructed and how ideas survive the distance between conception and execution.
But beneath that professional history was something more persistent: curiosity. The desire to see what happens next.
Today, Durnham is moving away from the boundaries that once defined his professional life. Photography, filmmaking, composition and visual art are no longer separate disciplines. They have become parts of the same vocabulary.
His current work moves between fashion, music, film and experimental storytelling, often exploring the space between image and sound and the increasingly blurred relationship between technology and artistic expression. Generative AI has entered that space as well. For Durnham, it is another tool, another way of seeing, another possibility. Not the destination, but part of the journey.
